DC League of Super-Pets 2022

C+

This animated movie, centered on Superman's dog, Krypto, didn't get great reviews when it came out, only earning a 56 on Metacritic (60 is generally the cutoff for a decent movie). It is more of a lighthearted superhero movie and drew comparisons to The Secret Life of Pets. However it comes with some big backup, with the whole DC universe to draw on, plus the voice cast is pretty star-studded with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Keanu Reeves, John Krasinski, and Saturday Night Live alums Kate McKinnon and Vanessa Bayer. It has a few things to offer and kids would probably like it, but it was a little disappointing for me. A lot of the movie centers on Krypto feeling left out as Superman's relationship with Lois Lane grows. That's a downer that isn't going to completely go away, but it also draws attention to why Superman should even have a dog. Given his abilities, are people dying in crimes and tragedies because Superman is out taking his dog for a walk? At best, Superman is going to be out of the house quite a bit, which doesn't make the best situation for a dog. Why doesn't Superman have a staff of assistants? Anyway, in order to have a movie like this a lot of things have to happen and one of those is that the whole Justice League is fairly easily rounded up by an evil guinea pig. That plotline kind of spirals out of control while Krypto tries to put together a ragtag team of superpets to save Superman and the others. There are a lot of animal jokes, including too many bathroom jokes, but nothing stands out. It isn't that bad, but it isn't that good. The big thing about Krypto feeling neglected is beaten to death, but there are some other themes that work okay. I feel like ultimately they made the villain way too powerful, such that everything depends on superpowers instead of on cleverness or empathy. A lot of the side characters seem like flat misfits instead of being fleshed out.
