It Was Just an Accident 2025
This movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film, which it did not win, but it still seemed like it might be a good bet when I got a free rental. I didn't know what to expect. It is about some former vicitims (male and female) of a brutal prison interrogator in Iran, who have been released, but one of them kidnaps a guy he thinks is that guard, though none of them ever actually saw him since they were blindfolded. So there is a lot going on. Do they want to actually kill this guy? Are they sure it is the right person? And then there is another question, which is Did they really make this in Iran, a country where the government killed thousands of protesters? The last question might be the most interesting since, yes, they did make it in Iran, and most of the people who made it still live there. The movie is mostly about these victims who are often comical in their ineptness and the way they struggle to deal with their situation. In a lot of ways that is the most compelling part of the movie plot. But there is also some very heavy baggage as these victims of severe trauma have to relive what happened to them and make this important life or death decision. It seems like a lot of the middle of the movie is them yelling at each other, then there is a really crazy almost ending and a very intense real ending that we have been dreading. It is a good movie, but it is a fairly simple setup, so it ends up being stretched out for too long, which is why I can't give it an A.
